THE EBRO RIVER BATTLE REBELS REPORT SUCCESSFUL THRUST REPUBLICANS DENY LOSS OF GROUND (Recd This Day, 9.45 a.m.) . SALAMANCA, August 5. The Nationalists claim to have beat-1 en back the Republicans’ right flank at the Ebro River, where there has been the bitterest fighting to protect General Franco’s key city of Gandesa, and assert that there have been 20,000 Republican casualties since the river was crossed on July 24. The Republicans maintain that the insurgents have not made any noticeable advance.
