TAXPAYER’S BURDENS

PEACE BY PREPAREDNESS. The taxpayer’s burdens are the price to be paid for extensive social services that guarantee the material welfare of the people and for Britain’s political security in an apprehensive and unpacified world, says “The Times” in comment on the Budget. These burdens are now increased and there is small prospect of their being diminished except by a general agreement for the reduction or limitation of armaments, which can only come as the result of international understanding. Those who are most alive to the inherent wastefulness of expenditure on armaments, and the competition and tension that compel it, will be the readiest to show a sense of responsibility in the discussion of foreign relations. The Budget itself puts, as it were, a practical valuation upon the efforts being made by the Government to find, if it can honourably be found, the way of reconciliation and goodwill. Yet this policy can only be pursued effectively by a country strong enough to command respect and consideration.
