There died at Croydon Private Hospital, Carterton, last evening after a very brief illness, a respected citizen in the person of Mr Melville Francis King, at the age of 41 years. The late Mr King had been a prominent figure in various institutions in Carterton fpr several years past. He was a keen member of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, had held office for many years and was 1 upon the retirement of Mr R. Smith recently appointed secretary arid treasurer. He was a live link in the activities of the Carterton Swimming Club and was an excellent swimmer. He also was an enthusiastic member of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, becoming a member in 1921. He had passed through the offices of the lodge with distinction and at the time of his death was treasurer of the lodge, which position he had held since 1931. He was also an ardent member of Loyal Wairarapa • Past Grands Lodge of Odd Fellows. In his lodge he was a keen ritualist and his efforts in both lodges will be sadly missed. The late Mr King was esteemed by a very large circle of friends. Last Thursday he attended the annual meeting of the Past Grands’ Lodge and within the next two days he was stricken with pneumonic influenza. The late Mr King was the third son of Mr and Mrs D. T. King, very old residents of Carterton, and leaves a wife and two young sons to whom the deepest sympathy will be extended. The late Mr King was a returned soldier, having seen service in the Great War, and was at the time of his death a member of the Carterton Returned Soldiers’ Association. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving his late residence, Davey Street, for the Clareville Cemetery. Members of the Carterton R.S.A. and of the Loyal Wairarapa Past Grands’ Lodge are invited to attend his funeral. ARBOR DAY ACTIVITIES. The Carterton Women’s Institute Garden Circle members were active on Arbor Day, when about 20 members assembled at the railway yards, where they planted two sypress trees at the entrance to the main gates fronting Broadway. The Circle members decided to further improve the surroundings, and each member offered to contribute a shrub to be planted in a plot which will be constructed later. The stationmaster, Mr H. Meyrick, expressed his appreciation of the efforts of the ladies.
