< Mr W. Whiteman is leaving Masterton tomorrow to take up a position with Messrs Hannah and Co., Stratford. The Rt Hon M. J. Savage, Prime Minister, returned to Wellington yesterday from the South Island. Sir Harold Beauchamp, who has been visiting England, is returning by the liner Rangitane, which is due at Auckland on August 24. Mr R. F. Mainland, Lower Hutt, who has been appointed engineer to the New Plymouth Borough Council, will take up his duties on September 1. At last night’s meeting of the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association, votes of condolence were passed with the relatives of the late Messrs J. A. Berry, M. F. S. King, P. L. McLaren and A, P. Whatman. The Hon W. Nash, Minister of Finance, will leave Wellington for Christchurch by aeroplane tomorrow to open the New Zealand Industries Fair in the evening. He will return to Wellington on Sunday. Mr J. Thorn, M.P. for Thames, who represented the Government at the International Labour Conference at Geneva, is returning by the Rangitane, due at Auckland on August 24. He is accompanied by Mrs Thorn. There was a representative attendance at the funeral yesterday afternoon of the late Mr W. J. Fawcett. Many beautiful wreaths were sent by sympathisers. The Rev E. J. Rich conducted a service at the residence, Roberts Road, and also officiated at the graveside. Professor Alexander Findlay, of the University of Aberdeen, who is one of the external examiners, in chemistry for the University of New Zealand, is a passenger by the liner Rangitane, due at Auckland on August 24. Professor ' Findlay, who is accompanied by Mrs Findlay, will deliver lectures at the various university colleges. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon of the late Mrs G. M. Ross, there being a large attendance of mourners. Amongst others, wreaths were sent by the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, Knox Church, and Knox Ladies’ Guild. The Rev John Davie conducted services at the residence and at the cemetery. The pall-bearers were six grandsons — Messrs Murray, Bruce, Donald, John and Douglas Ross and Sydney Taylor.
