GOLF

MAORI CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY J. MAPU. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, August 4. Playing exceptionally sound golf in driving rain and a strong south-east-erly wind, J. Mapu had a decisive victory over Kurupo Tareha when he won the final of the New Zealand Maori golf championship this afternoon. Mapu went out in 38 to Tareha’s 42, and was three Up at the turn. Coming home Mapu started badly, giving up the 10th when his ball went into trees, but he steadied at the 12th, was four up at the 13th which was halved in fives, and Mapu clinched the match with a bogey five at the 14th to win 5 and 4.
