DELICATE EMBROIDERY
BEAUTY FROM HUNGARY. Hungarian women have always been famous for their chic, and still another type of embroidery hails from that country—floral work of great beauty. It is colourful, more or less conventional in design, and perhaps the best way to describe it is to say that it looks .very much, like the delicate embroidery our grandmothers used to do on fire-screens. Faille and satin evening gowns are heavily worked. over the shoulders and round the full, skirt hems, and smart afternoon suits are finished with similar touches of embroidery down the jacket fronts. From Middle Europe, too, we learn new. ways of using lace. Insertions are embroidered on to hooped skirts, and we also, find complete- overdresses embroidered on the corsage and round the- hiplines to ensure a slim silhouette. When lace is arranged like this over a contrasting foundation, some very lovely brocade-like effects are achieved. A touch, of embroidery, indeed, seems diffiicult to avoid. Take, for instance, a tulle ball gown trimmed on the skirt with trails of tulle roses. These have bead stamens, and ( the stems and leaves are worked in with beads. Greece has not lost its influence in the world of dress. We find ’ gracefully pleated, gowns with low, draped hiplines held with wide girdles of beautiful sequin embroidery.
