BRILLIANT SUCCESS
ANNUAL WAIRARAPA CHARITY BALL MUNICIPAL HALL CROWDED LAST NIGHT. PRESENTATION OF DEBUTANTES. The Municipal Hall, Masterton, was last night transformed into a symphony of multi-coloured wisteria and hanging clematis for the annual Wairarapa Charity Ball. Dancers were present from all parts of the Wairarapa and adjacent districts and the hall presented a brilliant scene of animated gaiety. The ball was highly successful and once again the St Vincent de Paul Society is to be congratulated on the outcome of its annual effort to raise funds tor the relief of distress in the Wairarapa.
The decorations in the main hall were strikingly attractive and reflected great credit on Mr L. Robinson, who was responsible for the design of the scheme and was in charge of the decorations committee. The supper room and tables were also beautifully decorated with wisteria and spring blooms. From every angle, the ball maintained and perhaps excelled the high standards set in previous years. Carried out with due pomp and ceremony, the presentation of the debutantes to Monsignor McManus was a brilliant and impressive spectacle and one that must have left a lasting impression on the young ladies making their debut in society. Messrs I, Seivers and J. Hamill were marjhals for the procession. Monsignor McManus attended in the unavoidable absence, on account of illness, of his Grace, Archbishop< O’Shea. The debutantes were: —Patricia Hanley, white silk stiffened tule over taffeta, heart shaped neck, puff sleeves, Pashel posy, flowers over skirt and sleeves; Kathleen Mabey, white stiffened cobweb chantilly lace and net over satin, Peter Pan collar Empire style; Margaret Gaynor, silk georgette over taffeta; Angela Kiernan, satin brocaded taffeta; June Taylor, white silk net and taffeta; Mary O'Neale, white cloque; Mollie Hart, parchment pony skin taffeta; N. Harran, white lace; Maureen'Eastwood, white silk stiffened net over taffeta; Beatrice Reilly, white taffeta; Audrey Kelly, white silk stiffened net over taffeta.
As usual the supper arrangements were an outstanding feature of the ball and the members of the ladies' committee responsible are deserving of the highest praise for their fine work. The committee was as follows; Mesdames A. R. Bunny, Brooks, J. Dwyer, D. B. Curry, Carrie, Herbert. D. Hogan, H. Keisenberg, Gaynor, McPhaile, Mitchell, Eastwood snr, P. Hamill, Connors, Misses Cavanagh and Buckley. The Matrons of Honour were Mrs A. Bunny, Masterton, and Miss H. Card, Featherston. On his arrival at the hall, Monsignor McManus and members of the official party were met by the following reception committee: Messrs J. W. Card, J. Savage, J. Jameson, D. B. Curry, E. K. Eastwood, and F. Corry. Excellent music was supplied by Udy’s Orchestra and the Blue River Dance Band, while Messrs B. Iveson, W. C. Orange and J. J. Hunter capably carried out the duties of M.’sC. . Much of the outstanding success of the ball was undoubtedly due to the organising work of the joint secretaries, Miss M. Diggens and Mr E. K. Eastwood, who spared no pains to ensure the success of the ball and the enjoyment of the dancers. That their work should be crowned with such success was a fitting reward for their energies.
