Dunedin’s old Chief Post Office in Dowling Street has undergone another metamorphosis. Originally it was built for the early volunteers. When the Post Office in Princes Street was demolished, the Government took over the Dowling Street property as a makeshift. Since the new Chief Post Office has been occupied the old building has offered a cold, gloomy exterior to passers-by. Recently, however, it has been used by the Public Works Department, which has constructed some 30 or 40 huts within it for use by men on constructional work on the roads.
