TRIP TO MT. HOLDSWORTH
BY TRAMPING CLUB MEMBERS. The opening trip of the Wairarapa Tramping Club for the year, to Mt Holdsworth, held last Sunday, though not made in good weather, was nevertheless, well attended by club members who spent a very enjoyable day. All the way from the Bannister Hut to the Mountain House those of the party who carried cameras had a busy time and their most difficult problem was to choose which of the many beautiful snow scenes to snap. Heavy snow had fallen on the upper reaches of the ranges, creating such a great weight on the branches of trees that they were bending downwards, and in some places the snow had piled up to a depth of several feet. Although conditions were not encouraging, several enthusiasts took skis with them. It is apparent that this thrilling winter sport is extending its popularity inNew Zealand. Two coils of cyclone netting purchased by the Holdsworth Club to improve the sleeping quarters in Mountain House were carried up by the Tramping Club members. It is a pity that the work and money put into this house seems, in some quarters at least, to receive but little respect and appreciation to judge by the manner in which at times the hut is damaged. Three club members, however, have recently been appointed honorary forest rangers and more authority is now held than formerly. Members will be advised when and where the next trip is to take place and in the meantime thos interested should communicate’ with Mr B. lorns, Bunny Street, Masterton, or Mi’ T. Jack, Public Trust Office, Masterton.
