LORD RUTHERFORD’S GIFT

THOUGHT OF OLD SCHOOL ON DEATHBED. BEQUEST TO NELSON COLLEGE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NELSON, This Day. A bequest of £lOO was made to Nelson College by the late Lord Rutherford of Nelson, whose ashes were laid to rest in Westminster Abbey alongside those of Newton, Faraday, Kelvin, Darwin and Huxley. In a letter, received by the Council of the Nelson College Governors, through solicitors, Lady Rutherford said: “Within an hour or so of his death, my dear husband said to me, in a very tired voice: “I want to leave £lOO to Nelson College, you can see to it.” And then loudly: “Remember a hundred to Nelson College.” He hardly spoke aftei’ that. I am sure his old college will be touched to hear that even on his deathbed he remembered it. It gives me great pleasure to carry out his bequest, which I know he had intended to put in his will.” The Council of Governors express the deepest appreciation of the gift. The Public Trustee informed the Governors of Nelson College that a legacy of £5OO from the estate of the late Dr Renwick was now at the disposal of the council, for the foundation of a Renwick scholarship, fpjlowing on the recent death of his wife.
