HOPE FOR THE WORLD
CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOUR CONVENTION. GATHERING IN MELBOURNE. MELBOURNE, August 2. Flags of all nations symbolising the unity of the Christian Endeavour movement decorated the Exhibition Building tonight, when the tenth World Convention of the Christian Endeavour Union opened in the presence of about 8000 people. More than 2000 delegates from all parts of Australia and overseas are taking part in the sessions. The world president, Dr. Daniel Poling, of Philadelphia, in a message before the proceedings began, said: “We believe these sessions will provide a message of hope for the troubled world. In our proceedings emphasis will be laid upon all that unites and saves and never upon that which divides and destroys.” A feature of the opening tonight was the lighting of the convention’s multiple torch, comprising 20 torches, one to each country represented, which will burn on the platform throughout the convention.
