OIL PRODUCTION

DEVELOPMENT IN AUSTRALIA EXPLORATION OF SHALE DEPOSITS SOME HOPES OF ULTIMATE SELF-SUFFICIENCY (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Sir Charles Marr, of Sydney, arrived by the Wanganella on a short business visit to New Zealand. In an interview, he laid stress on the interest being taken in Australia in efforts to develop oil resources. He mentioned Newnes, where oil had been obtained from shale for 25 years, but now largescale production was being attempted, and a pipeline was being constructed to Parramatta, a hundred miles away. Both the State and Commonwealth Governments were financially interested in the venture, and it was estimated that within four years Newnes would be able to supply ten per cent of Australia’s total oil fuel requirements. There were also rich deposits of shale in Tasmania and natural oil in Papua, and it was possible that in time Australia would be self-sufficient in oil.
