OBITUARY

MRS G. M. ROSS Mrs G. M. Ross, one of Masterton’s early identities, passed away this morning at 98 Perry Street, and will be mourned by a large circle of friends. She was born at Dumbarton, Scotland, in 1857, and when quite young moved into Edinburgh. She Wellington in the sailing ship Arethusa married in July, 1877, and came to in 1879. After staying a rew months in Wellington she and her husband and one child, came to Masterton and settled in Queen Street, where Mr Ross followed his trade as a carpenter. In 1900 they shifted to a farm at West Taratahi and returned to Masterton in 1908, where, after a short break of four years at Hawkhurst, Mount Bruce, she had resided ever since. Mrs Ross was a woman of outstanding Christian character, always willing to do what she could to extend the Master’s kingdom. She was a member of Knox Church since 1880, a foundation member of the W.C.T.U., and was closely associated with all the women’s work in Knox Church. She had been a mother in Israel, and her strong Christian faith had been a sheet anchor to many a one in time of perplexity. She is survived by five daughters and five sons—Mesdames Taylor, (Levin) and Marshall (Wellington), and Misses Elizabeth, Margaret and Mary Ross of Masterton, and Messrs Alexander (Longbush), Charles (Martinborough) and Donald and George (North Auckland) and Wallace Ross (Featherston). Three sons saw service in the Great War. The funeral will take place tomorrow. leaving the residence, 98 Perry Street, at 3 p.m., for the Masterton Cemetery.
