NATIONAL PARTY

LEADER WELL SATISFIED WITH CANDIDATES. EVIDENCE OF GROWING STRENGTH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Keen satisfaction with the high standing and capabilities of the new candidates who will contest the general election this year in the interests of the National Party was expressed yesterday by the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon A. Hamilton. A conference of the selected candidates from the various electorates has been in progress in Wellington since Friday, and Mr Hamilton said he regarded the enthusiasm displayed as a most encouraging sign for the future. “In some directions, I suppose, we have to thank the Labour Government for the growing strength of the National Party, which has been clearly demonstrated at the conference,” said Mr Hamilton. “There has been so much resentment against much of Labour’s legislation and so many people have been adversely affected that men who previously were inclined to stand apart from politics have come forward willingly in a desire to serve their country. “Many of these men are among our new candidates. In the majority of cases, their entry into politics will involve them in business losses, but they are prepared to make this sacrifice in their desire to restore sane government in New Zealand.” Mr Hamilton said he had previously met most of the new candidates individually, but the opportunity of meeting them in a body and exchanging views with them on the political situation had given him an even stronger belief in the potentialities of the National Party. The candidates were drawn from all walks of life, some of them had distinguished academic records and many ’ had already served the Dominion well in various capacities.

There was general agreement among the sitting members of the Opposition in Parliament that the new candidates were of a type which had long been wanted in the public life of New Zealand. They were men who could be relied on to give ungrudging and efficient service to the country. (
