WINNING JOCKEYS

L. J. ELLIS HEADS LIST. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. For the fourth time in five years L. J. Ellis heads the list of winning jockeys in the 1937-38 season. Last year he had a long period of illness, which curtailed his activities. Even so, he rode 39 winners and during the past five years, since he succeeded K. Voitre in the premiership, he has had the winning mount in New Zealand on 376 occasions, the annual totals being 83, 93, 72, 39 and 89. Although L. J. Ellis has recaptured riding honours for the South Island in the season concluded on Saturday, the next eight on the list do most of their riding in the North Island. They are followed by three who are domiciled in the South. Details are as under: —L. J. Ellis 89, C. G. Goulsbro 72, B. H. Morris 58, W. J. Broughton 51, S. Wilson 48, R. W. McTavish 38, P. Atkins 37, H. N. Wiggins 37, G. R. Tattersail 35, J. W. Jennings 33, M. Caddy 32, A. E. Ellis 28, R. E. Horne 27, C. T. Wilson 25, N. R. McKenzie 24.
