STRATEGIC ISLAND
IN GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE HELD BY GERMAN SYNDICATE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT TAKING ACTION By Telegraph —Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 12.20 p.m.) OTTAWA, August 1. As a sequel to the House of Commons debate, when Mr R. B. Bennett alleged that German agents were attempting to purchase Anticosti Island, in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the Government today despatched- a Royal Air Force squadron to survey the island with a view to its fortification. It is owned by the Consolidated Paper Corporation, a German syndicate, which protested that they were interested only in the timber on it. A Defence Department communique states that it has plans to ensure that the island will not fall under nonBritish control.
