THREAT TO NANCHANG
« INHABITANTS IN FLIGHT APPALLING HARDSHIPS SUFFERED. ’ JAPANESE MOVE AGAINST RAILWAY. HANKOW, August 1. It is believed that the Japanese advance southward from Kiukiang is aimed at Nanchang in order to facilitate the cutting of the Hankow-Canton railways. Nanchang is already virtually deserted and the fleeing inhabitants are experiencing appalling hardships, perishing from starvation, exposure and disease. BRITONS MALTREATED. PROTEST TO JAPANESE. SHANGHAI, August 1. The British Consul has protested to the Japanese concerning the maltreatment of a British woman and a British constable named Hamlyn, who went to her aid when crossing the bridge of the International Settlement.
