FIGHT WITH PIRATES
STEAMER RESCUES JUNKS MISSIONARIES UNDER FIRE (Recd This Day, 11.10 a.m.) SHANGHAI, August 1. Mr Joseph Thomson and Mrs Thomson, New Zealanders, members of the China Inland Mission, were under fire from pirates when the passengers on the steamer Santarem, which went to the rescue of junks which were threatened by pirates. The Santarem’s challenge was met with a hail of bullets, and exchanges continued until the pirates were out of range.
