♦— Mr Natan Scheinwald, of Wellington, and formerly of Masterton, arrived in town yesterday on a business visit. Dr James Lyon, examiner of the Trinity College of Music, London, is conducting examinations for the college in the South Island. Mr H. A. Pope, chief booking clerk, New Zealand Railways, Palmerston North, has been promoted to the position of stationmaster, Putaruru.
A very enjoyable party was held recently at the residence of Mr and Mrs C. N. Stilburn, South Road, Masterton, when the 21st birthday of their son, Mr W. Stilburn, was celebrated in a fitting manner. Warm congratulations were extended to Mr Stilburn on reaching his majority. Colin Horsley, the 18-year-old Wanganui pianist, who is regarded as possessing exceptional musical talent, has left for England, where he will continue his musical studies under a scholarship for two years at the Royal College of Music, London. An appeal for funds to -help send him abroad produced £531.
Mr J. W. Davidson, M.A., has been elected to a Strathcona Research Studentship at St John’s College, Cambridge. Mr Davidson, who took firstclass honours in history at Victoria University College, Wellington, last year, is at present on the research staff of the Centennial Branch of the Internal Affairs Department. Mr W. Marshall, Paeroa, has been elected president of the New Zealand County Councils’ Industrial Union of Employers and representative of the union on the advisory board of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation. The retiring president of the union, Mr C. J. Talbot, has been elected vicepresident. Messrs J. Wing and L. Archer, whose dogs competed at the Waterloo Cup meeting at Invercargill last week, returned home today. Mr J. Bradbury (president) and members of the Wairarapa Coursing Club met them on their arrival and congratulated them on their success. Mr W. James, who won the Waterloo Cup with The Clipper, is remaining in the South Island for a few days. After his return, the Wairarapa Club intends to celebrate the victories gained by local competitors at a suitable function.
