CARTERTON

PERSONAL ITEMS. (“Times-Age” Special). Mr J. G. McDonald’s many friends will be pleased to learn that he is now on the road to recovery after his serious illness. The friends of Mr M. F. King, of /Carterton, will regret to hear that he is an inmate of Croydon Hospital. Mrs Gayfer, of Rhodes Street, is at present .in hospital. Her friends will be glad to know she is progressing satisfactorily. The condition of Mrs Lawrensen, of Garrison Street, who is an inmate of the Greytown Hospital, is causing her relatives and friends anxiety. Her son, Mr E. Lawrensen has arrived from Christchurch and will stay in Carterton during his mother’s illness. • r FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS. The supporters of the Carterton senior football fifteen were very jubilant over the team’s victory at Grey town on Saturday. This win gives the team the distinction of being Wairarapa senior champions for 1938. Carterton has one more game to play —against Masterton. So far Carterton has only suffered defeat once this season, when Grey town won.

THE LATE MR GRIMMER. The funeral of the late Mr Geo. H. Grimmer took place on. Saturday afternoon when the cortege was a very large one. The pall-bearers were Messrs L. G. Callis (Palmerston North), W. C. Deller, J. B. Lawrence, J. Dryden, S. V. Gooding and R. Williams. A short service was held at the deceased’s residence by the Rev. W. F. Stent, Vicar of St. Mark’s, Carterton, who also conducted the service at the graveside. Many beautiful wreaths were sent by friends, and a special one was placed upon the casket before it wgs lowered into the grave. MINIATURE RIFLES MATCH. The selectors, Messrs W. Johnson and C. J. DeLacey have chosen the following Wairarapa miniature rifle shooters to representsthe association in an inter-association match with Bush representatives (20-aside) at Pahiatua on Wednesday next: —B. R. Jenkins, H. King, Mrs G. King, P. Russell,. D. P. ' Donald, H. K. Smith, L. Renall, H. V. Donald (Masterton); C. Bain, L. G. Rasmussen, A. Gain, L. Lumsden, M. Hodder, L. Hodder (South Featherston); B. Williams, A. Reed, (Featherston); R. Hawker, N. F. Teal (Carterton); D. J. Flynn (Martinborough); Geo. Te Whaiti (Greytown). Emergencies: C. McCardle, R. V. Mason, J. Bain, A. Yule, W. Johnson. The Carterton Club will fire an inter-club match with Featherston on the Carterton range on Thursday next, and will be represented as under: —J. R. Taucher, H. H. L. Meyrick, R. Hawker, Miss Fisher, H. Torrey, W. Sewell, Geo. Sewell, N. F. Teal, J. T. Bridge, C. DeLacey. B -team: D. Gayfer, Miss A. McPhee, E. Miller, S. McGarvey, G. Goodin. Emergency: O. Daysh. FOOTBALL RESULTS. Third grade: Martinborough 16, Carterton 5. Fourth grade: Carterton 9, Wairarapa College 8. BISHOP'S VISIT The Bishop of Wellington preached at St Mark’s Church last evening to a large congregation. The visit was principally for the purpose of making an appeal for the Wellington Cathedral Fund, and the Bishop’s Fighting Fund. ' The Bishop announced that five members of the church promised donations aggregating £675, and it was his desire that everyone in the district should assist in some way. Fifty laymen and fifty clergymen at the recent Synod had donated no less than £6OOO, and it was gratifying the response that was being received even from small parishes. The Bishop announced that he was travelling round to every parish in the Diocese. Everyone could ‘JtsXist, and the importance of the pro-, ject made it necessary for all to make a sacrifice. Special hymns were sung, Mrs F. G. Bath presiding at the organ. At the conclusion of the service the Bishop pinned Cathedral and Fighting Fund badges on voluntary helpers, until the supply was exhausted. The Rev W. F. Stent, vicar, assisted the Bishop in conducting the service. BOGEY COMPETITION.

The following were the best cards returned in a bogey competition played on the Taratahi links on Saturday: —G. Riggs, 1 up; H. Colsen, 1 down; D. L. Taverner, 3 down; P. Shankland, 3 down; G. Hart, 4 down.
