SAFETY CROSSING
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —It was simply amazing to read in the issue of your journal of the 27th instant that the Mayor is opposed to the provision of safety crossings for pedestrians in Masterton. (I have been waiting daily for the markings to appear!) This is regrettable as it is very obvious daily in Queen ' Street that numerous aged people ’ and mothers with perambulators and/or with small children in hand require the protection afforded by safety crossings. Apparently these people are to be sacrificed in order that motorists may have speedy transit through the town. The safety crossings for pedestrians are a wonderful success wherever introduced (in New Zealand and Australia) and in this respect Carterton is to be heartily congratulated on its progressiveness in showing Masterton the way.
In so far as Masterton is concerned, ■however, it is easily discerned that the council will require to face up to the following problem in the near future; the diversion of through motor traffic to adjacent parallel streets and the introduction of safety crossings over the southern and northern ends of Queen Street (which would automatically bring about the diversion), preferably at the Regent Theatre and the Post Office—-both busy points. Surely the council is not going to lag in this matter. Now then!—l am, etc.,
