GENERAL EVA BOOTH
REMARKABLE VITALITY. HOW SHE KEEPS IT. General Evandeline Booth, 72-year-old Salvation Army chief, challenged the 53-year-old leader of the fitness campaign to a sports duel recently. And he declined the “dare” —possibly because he knows the reputation of this astonishing woman. Lord Aberdare, chairman of the National Fitness Council, London, was opening a new- “Army” youth centre at Sunbury-on-Thames. General Booth said she regretted that he had left a tennis tournament to open the centre. And then she challenged him to hurdle, ride or drive any day he liked. Lord Aberdare modestly said that while he thought himself good at some sports, he would not take up the challenge. Perhaps he was wise. General Booth rides every morning on the common near her home. And she walks. And until a year or two ago she played lawn tennis. The European Congresses are now on and she has just returned from Switzerland. She is about to: leave for Norway. Officially, General Booth retires on Christmas Day—her 73rd birthday.
