HEAVY SNOWSTORM
HAWKE’S BAY COUNTRYSIDE COVERED. SEVERAL ROADS AFFECTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, July 29. Snow, which has been falling heavily on the ranges all day, extended to the foothills and lower country this afternoon, and tonight all the higher country between Waipawa and Dannevirke was under snow. Road conditions are very bad, and on some sections of the main highway between those two centres tonight motorists were held up. Heavy falls of snow are also reported in the high country to the west and south-west of Hastings. The heaviest fall in the lower country appears to be at Norsewood. Quite four inches of snow had fallen at Takapau and up to six inches at Ormondville.
Reports from Taupo tonight indicated that the fall of snow had extended right over the hill country to the centre of the island. Conditions on the Napier-Taupo Road, particularly on the Tikiokura and Turangakuma hills, were very difficult. A report from the Chateau Tongariro said that there had been a heavy fall of snow there. IN CANTERBURY. DISORGANISATION OF TRAFFIC. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 29. After-weeks of wet weather, Canterbury had its first general fall of snow this winter during the last 36 hours and there are few parts of the province not affected. The snow had caused disorganisation of traffic on most main routes and will give trouble to farmers. The lines of the Post and Telegraph Department and of power, authorities have also suffered some damage but otherwise the effect of the storm has not been serious. ■ ■r.. SPORTS EVENTS BEING HELD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Although two inches of snow fell during the night the Christchurch Hunt Club decided to hold the annual race meeting at Riccarton today. Only senior Rugby, League, Soccer and hockey matches are being played. Glorious sunshine followed the fall of snow. FALL IN OTAGO. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, July 29. Snow and sleet fell last night and this morning, with the result that all roads throughout the province are covered with snow. of varying depths. Snow fell in the Ashburton County last night, there being seven inches at Mount Somers, four inches at MethvetJ, and Ealing, over an inch in the Ashburton borough, and a sprinkle in the coastal districts.
