REVOLT IN CRETE
REBELS SEIZE CAPITAL CITY GOVERNMENT TAKES QUICK ACTION. STRONG FORCES HURRIED TO ISLAND. • “ By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. ATHENS, July 29. A revolt has broken out in Crete and the Government has hurriedly sent strong armed forces to suppress it. Four hundred armed rebels seized the capital of the island overnight. General Metaxas, Dictator of Greece, by a proclamation to-day, said that the revolt was confined to Crete and exhorted the rest of Greece to keep calm. The leaders of the revolt include M. Mitsotakis, ex-Minister or National Economy, and a nephew of M. Venizelos, also the ex-mayor of Canea. The rebels have thus far met little resistance, but the Government claims to have sent sufficient planes and troops to quell the outbreak in a day or two. ALL NOW QUIET. RISING COMPLETELY CRUSHED. (Recd This Day, 10.10 a.m.) ATHENS, July 29. The Cretan revolt has been completely crushed and the rebels have either fled to the hillsides or have surrendered. All is now quiet. The Government has moved the seat of government in Crete to Candia.
