VAIN STRUGGLE
TO AVOID INNINGS DEFEAT SOMERSET’S FATE SOON SEALED. AN EASY WIN FOR AUSTRALIA. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 29. Only a handful of spectators gathered at Taunton to witness Somerset’s vain struggle to avoid an innings defeat in the match against Australia. As it happened Somerset’s fate was sealed within 25 minutes of the resumption of play when the remaining batsmen were all out.
Andrews was caught at the wickets off a “wcong’un” from FleetwoodSmith, who was bowling with deadly accuracy and spinning viciously. He had Wellard floundering, and then out leg before wicket. In the next over he knocked out Barnwell’s leg-stump. Luckes played on and the tail-enders found Fleetwood-Smith unplayable. Australia won by an innings and 218 runs.
