TERRORISM IN SPAIN
MALTREATMENT OF BASQUE POPULATION FIGHTING ON CATALONIAN FRONT. SURPRISE ATTACK MADE BY LOYALISTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. LONDON, July 27. A carefully checked report received by the Trades Union Council headquarters reveals that, since the outbreak of the war in Spain, the insurgents have executed nearly 14,000 Basques, 10,000 without trial, imprisoned 30,000, sent 30,000 more to concentration camps, deprived 50,000 of civil rights, and driven 120,000 from the country. Meanwhile a message from Barcelona states that the loyalists, carrying out a surprise attack in order to create a diversion on the Catalonian front, have crossed the Ebro River at eleven points on a 90-mile front and approached within a mile of Gandesa, a keytown in the Tarragona area. The loyalists captured 2,500 rebels and took Corbera and Villalba. The insurgents, who minimise the attack, are rushing troops from Lerida and Balaguer. Four Junker (German) planes bombed Tarragona, killing five and wounding 21.
