A POOR SHOWING

MADE BY SOMERSET TEAM AUSTRALIANS START WELL RAIN STOPS PLAY By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 10.5 a.m.) LONDON, July 27. The match between Australia and Somerset started promptly today after early showers. Somerset lost two wickets within 10 minutes, and four were down for 41. Lee went out to a catch at second slip, and Buse was run out, due to a smart return from Hassett. McCabe pulled a thigh muscle, and left the field. Meyer batted confidently for 20 minuttes, but was eventually caught on the edge of the boundary. Lyon batted with polish in the early overs, but when O’Reilly and Fleet-wood-Smith found their length, he became uneasy and mistimed his drives. He. gave a high catch to deep mid-off. White, in his second over, bowled the patient left-hander, Longrigg. Rain stopped play at 12.45 o’clock, and after resumption, Gimblett was easily caught off a shockingly crude stroke. SOME BIG HITTING. Andrews and Wellard hit out desperately. The former lifted FleetwoodSmith for a sixer, the ball falling adjacent to the river and was lost. Then Wellard drove Ward for two enormous sixers. The first went across the river and was recovered, but the second fell into the river and was lost. The over yielded 16 runs. Somerset was dismissed, after a diverting if technically imperfect display, lasting 130 minutes against bowlers who hopelessly outclassed them. The Australians opened their innings at 3.5 o’clock. Walker played splendidly despite having had no practice for seven weeks. Badcock was in great form and reached 50 in 55 minutes, and at tea the pair had scored 106 in 70 minutes.

Rain stopped play at the tea adjournment after which there was no further play during the day.
