CARNATIONS

TIME TO TAKE CUTTINGS. The present is a good time to take cuttings of winter flowering carnations. These should be taken from plants that are vigorous and healthy; the shoots about the middle of the stem are the best and should be removed when three inches long. Insert them singly in small thumb pots, .filled with a compost consisting of equal parts of loam, leaf soil and silver sand passed through a jin sieve. Give a good watering with a rosed can and place them in.a frame on a stage of a greenhouse, where they can have a temperature of 55 degrees. It is an advantage to place the pots in fibre, keeping the frame fairly close until the cuttings are rooted, and dry the glass in the morning to dispel condensed -moisture. Shade lightly from bright sunshine. Propagation may be done up to the end of September.
