BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OF CARTERTON COUNCIL. CONDITION OF COSTLEY STREET. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided at the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council, held last night. Others present were: Councillors J. Udy, R. A. Copeland, O. Wolters. C. J. DeLacey, H. Mortenson, E. McKenzie, M. Clarke and W. A. Hart. The financial statement showed that cash received since the last meeting amounted to £415 2s Bd. For the period April 1 to July 21 receipts amounted to £795 Ils 5d as compared with £996 3s 6d .for the corresponding period of last year. Expenditure during the same period was £2027 7s 6d, as against £1286 14s 4d last year. The Post Office Savings Bank account was in credit £1248 Is 2d and there was a debit balance in the bank of £241 10s 9d. At the same date last year the credit in the Post Office was £1912 16s lOd and the bank balance was in debit £341 10s Id.

The Masterton County Council advised that the council’s allocation of heavy traffic fees for the year amounted to £199 12s lid as compared with £lB6 18s lOd last year.

In response to a letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs dealing with Arbor Day celebrations, it was decided to ask property owners in Dixon Street to consider planting trees when the widening reformation of the street was completed. The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote stating that the council’s contribution for the current year totalled £628 9s. The action of the Town Clerk in advising the Wellington Provincial Centennial Committee that the council approved of the Wairarapa as being a separate one for a centennial memorial, was endorsed. It w",s decided in the meantime to undertake to purchase one copy of the proposed memorial history of the Wellington province.

A petition was received from the residents of Costley Street asking that improvements be made to the condition of the street. It was stated that at times it was almost impossible to use the street without gumboots. It was suggested that Public Works labour should be utilised in effecting a lasting improvement. The matter was referred to the Works Committee for attention.

The Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade forwarded a financial statement for the year ended June 30, 1938. There was a credit balance of £6 17s 8d as compared with a credit of £9 10s last year.

The Post and Telegraph Department wrote stating that it was prepared to shift the poles in Dixon Street on a 5050 basis with the council. The cost of the council on that basis would be £lB 10s. The action of the Clerk in agreeing to the shifting of the poles on that basis was endorsed.
