A NEGLECTED CONCERT

, (To the Editor.) Sir, — Those who were fortunate enough to be present at the concert given in aid of the building fund of the new Sunday School by the conductor and Choir of Knox’s Church last evening must have lamented the conspicuous absence of music lovers (including members of the church themselves who should, above all others, have put in an appearance) even if only to support their hard-working and worthy minister in his great task. Speaking as one who is credited of having a good all-round knowledge of music (having spent a considerable time in the Guildhall School of Music, London), the concert rendered by this little band of workers was indeed most surprising, every artist putting up a very creditable performance, which was further augmented by Wellington artists of repute who gave without fee or recompense, of their best. Why is it that men and women of today do not support these splendid efforts (saying nothing of the purpose or object of such efforts)? Does it mean that the public (not the members of the church, oh dear no!) would sooner pay a few “bob” to witness a wrestling or a boxing match using the name of “the noble art of self-defence” for what oft times is nothing more nor less than a sordid exhibition in an attempt to maim each other? Shame on you Masterton people! Get behind your minister and support him and his able conductor and Choir in their splendid and heroic attempts to provide our kiddies with the spiritual knowledge that many of them, I regret to say, lack. I am sure nobody could have left the church last evening without feeling a better man or woman for having been present. It is to be hoped that should we be fortunate enough to have another of these concerts, there will be a much larger attendance.— Thanking you, etc., 808 PHILGARLIC. Masterton, July 27.
