ATTEMPT TO KILL AMERICAN GOVERNOR. OFFICER KILLED AND OTHERS INJURED. (Recd This Day, 9.15 a.m.) SAN- JUAN, July 25. National extremists attempted to assinate Governor Winship during a fete celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the American occupation of Porto Rico. Governor Winship was not injured but a National Guard officer was shot dead and eight persons were wounded.

Porto Rico is a West Indian island lying east of Haiti, in the Greater Antilles; area 3435 sq miles; population 1,300,000 (950,000 whites, 300.000 mulattos, 50,000 blacks). The climate is healthy. There are 2,000,000 acres under cultivation and products include sugar, tobacco, coffee, corn fruits, cotton, ginger, hemp, cacao, etc. The island passed to the U.S.A, after the war with Spain.
