Chinese headquarters admit that the Japanese bombardment of the west bank of Poyand Lake has destroyed their shore fortifications and resulted in the “holy sacrifice of all our men,” but the defenders are still holding the Lion Hill fort, key to the defence of Kiukiang. All Government departments will have moved by August 1 to Chungking, on the Yangtse River’s inaccessible gorges of the upper reaches, where, according to a Chinese proverb, all wars end. Peking reports that very heavy rain has brought war operations in Shansi to a standstill. All the rivers in North China are flooded, and the city is experiencing a shortage of fresh foods. Nine bombers raided Canton, yesterday, an aerodrome and a cement works being the chief sufferers. JAPANESE NEARING KIUKIANG. SHANGHAI, July 25. Japanese forces are reported to be within a few miles of Kiukiang, which is now being shelled by warships and bombed by planes in relays. RUSSIANS AT HANKOW. ACCORDING TO JAPANESE REPORT. The Domei Agency asserts that twenty Soviet military advisers have replaced repatriated German officers at Hankow, where 200 Russian pilots and engineers have arrived.
