HOLD-UP WITH PACIFIC LINERS GOVERNMENTS CRITICISED. CANADA AGREES TOO LATE By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. LONDON, July 23. In connection with the decision not to build two new Pacific liners, Sir Edward Beatty," chairman of Canadian Pacific Steamships, and Lord Craigmyle, in a joint statement, said the plans and specifications of two new ships were submitted to selected shipbuilders. Unfortunately shipbuilding prices reached an uneconomic peak. Accordingly the company decided that construction at present was impracticable. The postponement was regretted, but the company anticipated the resumption of discussions. The Australian Associated Press understands that the decision is the sequel to Governmental procrastination and lost opportunities. AngloDominion Governments, excepting Canada, earlier agreed to the scheme, when construction could have been achieved at £2,500,000 compared with the present estimate of £5,000,000. Canada finally acquiesced, but too late.
