Torrential rains poured down over 1000 miles of Atlantic seaboard, the Gulf States and as far west as Texas, leaving at least eight dead and 13 missing. Property damage totals hundreds of thousands of dollars. It was the seventh consecutive day’s hard rain. Near New York City, an earlymorning cloudburst sent a slide of mud and stone against a train, injuring 15. Highways are blocked throughout the suburbs. New Jersey reports a fatal bus accident and Long Island two fatal drownings. In Connecticut it is estimated that the damage to highways due to washouts and landslides is at least 10,000 dollars. Blinding rain caused a navy bomber to crash near Woodbridge, Connecticut, killing the pilot and two passengers. Two are drowned, 13 missing, 500 have been driven from their homes and damage is at least 300,000 dollars in Texas due to the overflow of the Sansaba River. Crop damage in New York State alone is expected to exceed a million dollars. Air travel is halted throughout the cast.
