In a hard-fought game played at Memorial Park and characterised by solid forward play by the Masterton pack, Red Star staged a brilliant recovery to hold their old rivals off and win 14-12. The Masterton forwards played well throughout, and by following up their, movements were extremely dangerous on a number of occasions. The backs on either side did not see much of the ball until towards the end of the second spell when play opened out and there were patches of bright open football. Fortunes fluctuated in the early stages of the game but after fifteen minutes play Barnett, the Masterton centre kicked through into an open field and, beating the full-back, raced for the Red Star line. Peterson, the speedy Star winger came up fast and took possession, but Gray appearing from nowhere fell on the ball and Masterton were awarded a try. Reiri missed the kick. A few minutes later, M. Howard raced over to ' even the score. Stewart missed the kick. The Masterton forwards continued to attack and from a scramble on the Red Star line, Barnett scored. Percy failed to convert, and the half-time score
was 6/3 in Masterton’s favour. Early in ihe second spell, Red Star launched' an attack, and Peterson, who had not previously seen much of the ball, was almost over. However, Masterton soon cleared and were away again for Barnett to score his second try. Percy missed the kick. Stars retaliated hotly and once more Peterson was nearly over. An easy penalty kick by Stewart put Stars on the road to recovery. At this stage, improved football was being played by both sides. Howard leading a Star forward rush, crossed the Masterton line, and was awarded a penalty try. Stewart converted. A few minutes later, a brilliant effort by Peterson saw Star's total further increased. Stewart missed the kick. Masterton fought hard to gain supremacy, and were rewarded with a try by Reiri from a scramble on the Red Star line. Percy missed the kick, and the final whistle went with the score 14/12 in Red Star’s favour. Mr H. J. McKenzie was referee.
