INDIA v NEW ZEALAND. VISITORS WIN FIRST TEST. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 23. Before a crowd of about 10,000 the Prince of Manavadar’s Indian hockey team beat New Zealand by five goals to one in the first Test match at Lancaster Park this afternoon. The game was not as spectacular as the one with Canterbury, the ground cutting up badly and spoiling good stick play. The New Zealand team was decidedly inferior in the placing of passes, and free hits. India, on the other hand, showed magnificent understanding, and brilliant positional play. Frequently an Indian waited with the ball until attacked by a New Zealander, and then calmly flicked it in any direction desired. The game was remarkable for the number of obstructions. The record was: Obstruction against India, 29; New Zealand 27; knock-on, 7,4; kicks, 5,4; ..Offside, 7,4; sticks, 8,4; hooking, 1,1; scooping, 1, nil. Immediately after the bully there was a free hit to India, which was picked up well by Clark, who sent Roughton away up the centre for New Zealand, but a free hit near India’s goal was spoilt by offside play. A magnificent passing rush gave Ahmad Khan a chance and with a fine shot six minutes after the bully the score was India 1, New Zealand nil. Abdul Latif attempted to scoop the ball into the net, and W. Bowden came across smartly to clear, but hit the ball into the goal, scoring'for India. The score at half-time was India 2, New Zealand 0. New Zealand played better in the secofid spell, launching several strong attacks, but the defence was sound. After 20 minutes’ play, from a bully in New Zealand’s twenty-five, India swept down to the goal with Shahabuddin in possession. A magnificent centre gave Feroz Khan the chance to beat the goalie with a short flick. India 3, New Zealand nil. India went right through from their own twenty-five with a brilliant left wing rush for Fernandez to notch a brilliant goal. India 4, New Zealand 0. A knock-on by Gurnarain Singh earned New Zealand a penalty corner. It was hit out, and Watson netted with a magnificent shot which entered the net above the goalkeeper’s head. India 4, New Zealand 1. New Zealand made desperate efforts but the Indian defence was very sound. Shahabuddin drew New Zealand’s defence to flick the ball into the centre, where Fernandez scored the fifth goal with a fine shot half a second before the final whistle, making the score, India 5, New Zealand 1. wairarApa association. In the senior men’s division a start was made with the third and final round of the championship. Kiwi defeated Wesley at Lansdowne, while at Carterton the home team defeated Dalefield. The junior championship is in a very interesting position and it looks like Wesley A and College A meeting in an extra game to decide the championship. Saturday’s games resulted as follows: Senior. Kiwi 6, Wesley 2. Carterton 8, Dalefield 5. Junior. College 4, Wesley B 0. Dalefield 4, Carterton 2. Grey town 2, College 81. Senior Women. Kiwi 6, Carterton 0.
