SOCIAL EVENING

GATHERING AT WAIRARAPA COLLEGE ADDITION TO GROUNDS A social gathering of some seventy or eighty people was held in the Assembly Hall of Wairarapa College last evening under the auspices of the Parents’ Association, for whom Mrs G. C. L. Dickel acted as hostess, associated with her being Mesdames Prior, Masters, Judd and Towns. The special purpose of the gathering was to enable the association to become acquired with members of the Board of Governors, and also with the College staff, as with the increased size of the school, and its varied activities, close co-operation of the parents with the teaching staff is desirable. Those present expressed their appreciation of the acquisition of an additional area of 15 acres to the College grounds, and thanked Mrs Walter Nops for the generous gift of 2 roods 10.4 perches for tennis courts at the hostel. During the evening, Mr A. Owen Jones, on behalf of Mr H. P. Hugo, chairman of the Trust Lands Trust, gave a brief history of the foundation of the Trust, its present activities and its attitude toward education in the Masterton district. Appreciative reference was made to the help of the College staff in assisting one of the pupils, R. W. Prout, in securing the highest marks in the Dominion for practical work in the examination conducted by the Public Works Department for electrical wiring. Mr Prout received at Carterton a medal presented by the Cable Makers’ Association to mark his success. Opportunity was taken to say farewell to Messrs H. B. Massey, H. R. Thomson and Penistone, who are leaving' the district. The Principal, Mr G. G. Hancox, announced arrangements for tree planting during the coming week.' During the evening, musical items were given by Mrs Prior and Mr G. Masters, and a very attractive display of dancing by Miss Edwards. Supper was provided by the ladies and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought to a close a very successful evening.
