CARTERTON
SILVER TREE SOCIAL. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual silver tree social held in the Methodist Sunday School on Wednesday evening proved an outstanding success in every way and augmented the church funds to the extent of £2O. Mr L. T. Hunt was responsible for the effective decorations, which completely transformed the schoolroom, the Silver Tree being enhanced by a unique lighting effect. A programme of excellent items was contributed by Miss Ralph, Miss Jones, Mr A. Kay, of Masterton, and Mrs Worsfold, Carterton. There were competitions and supper was served by the Ladies’ Guild. Votes of thanks were accorded all helpers, and the singing of the Doxology terminated a very enjoyable and successful evening. DRAMATIC CLUB. A general meeting of the Carterton Amateur Comedy and Dramatic Club was held in the Fire Brigade Hall on Thursday. The chairman, Mr R. T. Forbes, was in the chair. The treasurer submitted the financial statement, showing a total credit balance .of £2/10/9. , ' It was decided on the motion of Mrs D. G. Johnston, seconded by Mrs S. Copeland, that the balance sheet be adopted as . read. A letter was received from the Plunket Society thanking the club for the donation in aid of their funds. It was resolved on the motion of Mr R. T. Forbes, seconded by Mrs G. Johnston, that Mr E. Fisher be ap- . pointed treasurer of the club. '■ Mr Forbes stated that it had been decided in committee that in future members annual subscriptions be 7s 6d, reducible to 5s if paid within the month. It was proposed by Mr E. Hedley and seconded by Mr C. Deller, that in future the club ask members, not cast in the 3 act plays, to provide an entertainment at some hall other than the Tivoli Theatre to which a small charge for admission would be made. Any funds thus raised to be donated to the club funds. The motion was carried. After the selection of the cast for the next play had been made it was _ decided to calf a meeting of the remaining members regarding the production of one-act plays. The secretary reported that Mr •W. S. Steven was no longer able to continue as an active member and had expressed the wish to become an honorary member. The request was granted. The secretary was requesteci to circularise members regarding obtaining one new member each within a week. It was proposed by Mr E. Fisher and seconded by Mr R. T. Forbes, that a vote of thanks be conveyed to Mrs D. G. Johnston, Mr Tankersley, and the members of the cast in appreciation of the work carried out by them in connection with the production “Who Are They.” The motion was carried by acclamation. It was decided to call a general meeting after the producer had selected the play for the next production. , A vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting. PIPE BAND SHOP DAY. The Shop Day organised by the Pipe Band ladies’ committee, held last night for the purpose of raising funds towards Highland uniforms for the members of the band, yielded the sum of £l7. The dinner competition, brought in the sum of £6 17s 7d, and was won by Mr C. Jensen, Junr., Wai“hakeke. The cake was won by Miss Todd, Matarawa. OBITUARY. The death occurred on Thursday night at the residence of her parents, Mr and Mrs A. Lipinski, South Carterton, of Mrs Cecelia Ann Sayer, wife of Mr A. R. Sayer, of Dalefield, at the age of 26 years, after a long illness. Besides her husband, she leaves an infant son. The heartfelt sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to the bereaved husband and family in their great loss. The funeral will take place tomorrow at 1.30 p.m. Requiem Mass 'will be celebrated at St Mary’s Church at 9 a.m.
