MASTERTON WEST SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The chairman, Mr F. Shearer, presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton West School Committee on Thursday night. The secretary reported that the Education Board’s supervisor had visited the school and made an inspection of the new drain across the playground area, the interior of the school for painting, the tool shed accommodation, and the repairs to the broken asphalt areas. Accounts totalling £22 14s 9d were passed. The Education Board advised that the newly-appointed headmaster, Mr D. S. Rust, would commence duties at the Cole Street school on Monday, September 5. Details regarding the proposed radio installation were tabled. A definite decision- on the matter was held over pending the arrival of the new headmaster. Various repairs were authorised and the secretary was instructed to make application to the Department for the services of a man for general work in the schoolgrounds. The acting-headmaster, Mr V. Welch, reported as follows: —Main school toll, 254; average attendance, 214.9. Side school role, 99; average attendance, 88.9. It was stated that the drop in the average attendance was due to the incidence of colds and sore throats, and similar ailments.
