DEATH OF A CHILD

MOTHER FOUND GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER. VERY STRONG RECOMMENDATION TO MERCY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 22. A verdict of manslaughter with a very strong recommendation to mercy was returned by the jury in the Supreme Court against Hazel Frances Evans, aged 21. She was charged with murdering her five-months-old daughter by drowning her in the Northern Wairoa River on April 3. When the jury reported its verdict after a retirement of two hours and 10 minutes, Mr Justice Fair said he need hardly tell them that their recommendation to mercy would be given the fullest weight it could be given in the circumstances.. He remanded accused for sentence later.
