Messrs James S. Byas and Charles W. Gilton, the two negro debaters from Le Moyne College, Tennessee, returned by .private car yesterday to Wellington, where they sailed at 5 p.m. by the Awatea for Sydney. Following a brief illness, the death occurred at Palmerston North on Tuesday of Mrs Ellen Westbury Hewitt, wife of Mi- Francis Hewitt, Coriston, Kopuaranga. A short service at All Saints’ Church on Wednesday morning was conducted by Canon G. Y. Woodward, and the service at Wellington Crematorium was conducted by Canon D. J. Davies. Mrs Hewitt was born at Palmerston North. She was the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs R. S. Abraham, Batt Street, and received her education at Craven School. She married Mr Francis Hewitt, a son of Mrs T. Hewitt, and the late Captain Hewitt, R.N., Church Street, Palmerston North. For some years after their marriage, Mr and Mrs Hewitt lived on tne Hewitt estate, Linton. For a number of years Mr Hewitt was manager of Glenburn Station, Wairarapa. Recently they have been living on their own farm at Kopuaranga. Mrs Hewitt was of a bright and cheery disposition and won for herself a host of friends. She leaves a husband and a family of three, Mr Richard Hewitt, Tinui; Mrs R. Young, Pohangina; and Mr J. Hewitt, Kopuaranga.
