DISASTROUS FIRES
VANCOUVER ISLAND SWEPT SMALL TOWNS WIPED OUT AND OTHERS DOOMED ALLEGATIONS OF WHOLESALE SABOTAGE By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 11.45 a.m.) VANCOUVER, July 21. The worst forest fires in the history of British Columbia are sweeping Vancouver Island, over an area of 15 miles by eight miles. Forbes Landing, a summer resort, was wiped out after two Canadian destroyers had evacuated the population of 500. Six other towns, it is feared, are doomed. The timber loss is estimated to exceed two million dollars. Thirty fire-fighters have been dismissed and face arrest following on sabotage disclosure. In seven places hoses were found, to have been ruined with knives. At Forbes Landing, sumps were wrecked during the night. The petrol tanks of three fire-fighting tractors were found to contain sugar. Seventeen hundred men recruited to fight the flames, included 200 from Vancouver—former Post Office sitdown strike rioters.
