PERSONAL.
The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, is at present visiting Wellington. .The Hon F. Waite, M.L.C., arrived at Wellington yesterday morning from the south. Mr A. H. Johnstone, K.C.. returned to Auckland by the Wanganella aftera short holiday in Australia. Mr J. E. Ramsey, Seatoun, has been elected a councillor of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, in place of Mr C. R. Buhrer, who had resigned. Passengers who arrived in Wellington by the Awatea today include Mr G. H. Trott, General Manager of the Blue Star Line, London, and Mr S. F. Jones, Australian manager. The Wellington local office of the C. and D. Line has been advised that Mr W. G. De Gruchy,. former manager in Wellington, and Mr W. Donald, London manager, have been appointed to the board of directors, London. Sir Edward L. Ellington, Marshal of the Royal Air Force, arrived in Wellington by the Awatea from Sydney today, and will spend four days in the Dominion. He is proceeding to Canada at the conclusion of a mission to Australia.
Messrs James S. Byas and Charles W. Gilton, the two negro debaters from Le Moyne College, Memphis, Tennessee, arrived in Masterton this morning by private car. They are accompanied by Mr R. S. C. Agar, chairman of the New Zealand University Students’ Association.
Miss M. Ockenden, Senior Sister at the Greytown Hospital, was appointed at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board to the position of matron at the Pahiatua Hospital. Miss Ockenden, who replaces Miss G. Berry, who has resigned, has been in the employ of the board for the past 5J years. The Rev George Vincent Gerard, vicar of St Matthew’s, Auckland, and formerly stationed at Petone and Pahiatua, has been elected by the Diocese of Waiapu as Bishop, in succession to the late Rt Rev Herbert Williams. He was vicar of Pahiatua from 1929 to 1932, and has a fine record as a Rugby footballer and all-round athlete. Tribute to the memory of Mrs J. D. C. Crewe, of Pahiatua, who died as a result of a motor accident, was paid by hundreds of Women's Institute members from all parts of the Wellington Province, who attended her funeral on Monday. St Peter’s Church was packed for the service. Last year Mrs Crewe was the recipient of the coveted gold honours badge of the Women’s Institute, awarded for services rendered over a long period. She will be much missed by the many social organisations to which she gave her help.
