WORK OF PARLIAMENT YESTERDAY SEVERAL MEASURES ADVANCED BUDGET TO BE PRESENTED TONIGHT (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A start with the legislative programme for the session was made in the House of Representatives last night, following the completion of discussion on the report of the Committee of Inquiry into Maternity Services. After a brief debate the Arbitration Amendment Bill, which is designed tc simplify the procedure for the settlement of’ disputes by arbitration, was read a second time and referred to the Statutes Revision Committee. Weaknesses in the present law were pointed out by the Attorney-General, the Hon H. G. R. Mason, and other legal members of the House. There was general agreement that the procedure was the cause of vexatious and expensive delays, and it was desirable that steps should be taken to correct what were technical defects. Little discussion took place on the New Zealand Council of Law Reporting Bill, which incorporates the New Zealand Council of Law Reporting and places its activities on a constitutional basis. This Bill, and the Surveyors Bill, which constitutes a Survey Board, and consolidates the existing law relating to the surveying profession, were put through all stages and passed. Progress was made with the Municipal Corporations Bill, which contains a number of miscellaneous amendments to municipal law. The Prime Minister, the Rt Hon M. J. Savage, spoke during the afternoon on the report of the Committee of Inquiry into Maternity Service. He indicated that the recommendations of the committee would be given effect to. The House adjourned at 10.27 p.m. until today. The Budget will be presented tonight by the Minister of Finance, the Hon W. Nash.
