The trial has. opened at the Birmingham Assizes of John Bruce Thornton charged with attempting to kidnap Lord Nuffield, and with inciting a man- named Ramsden to compel Lord Nuffield to execute a letter of credit by restraining his person with intent to defraud Lord Nuffield. Thornton pleaded not guilty. Ramsden said in evidence he did his utmost to put Thornton off the plan. “I told him I considered the scheme impossible. and when he chartered a boat I thought it was time to go to Scotland Yard,” Ramsden continued. “I thought Thornton was going to commit a crime and I could not see any way of stopping it.” The case was adjourned.
