CENTENARY APPEAL
LAUNCHED IN WELLINGTON CATHEDRAL AND OTHER PLANS (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Representatives of almost all religious denominations attended a mass meeting in the Wellington Town Hall last night, when the Diocesan centenary appeal for £300,000 was officially launched. The two- main objects of the appeal are the erection of a £200,000 Cathedral in Wellington, with Synod Hall and Diocesan buildings, and the creation of a Bishop’s Fighting Fund of £lOO,OOO, to overcome the shortage of man-power and of adequate buildings for the work of the Church in the Diocese. The Bishop of Wellington, the Rt Rev H. St Barbe Holland, presided over an attendance which twothirds filled the hall. Support was pledged by speakers who included the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon M. J. Savage, the Mayor of Wellington, Mr T. C. A. Hislop, the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon A. Hamilton, the Minister of Finance, the Hon W. Nash, the Rt Hon J. G. Coates, Lady Pomare, representing the Maori people, and the Rev. P. J. Wainwright, Moderator of the Wellington Presbytery, representing Wellington ministers. The Ven. Archdeacon W. Bullock and the Bishop of Wellington also spoke. Messages expressing regret for unavoidable absence were received from Archbishop O’Shea and the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers.
