HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Society states inter alia:—The society again held three shows—Daffodil, Spring and Autumn, during September, November and March respectively. At all shows the quality of exhibits was well maintained, but it must be recorded that except for the Daffodil Show, where increased entries were received compared with the previous year’s show, there has been a decline in entries and in door takings. Your executive recommends that this trend be given careful consideration at the annual meeting of the Society. It will be seen that there has been a reduction of £9 3s lOd in the current bank balance during the year. This may be attributed mainly to the decrease in door takings and afternoon tea receipts and to an increase in prize money expenditure. During the year capital expenditure to the extent of £9 10s 5d (purchase of new crockery) was incurred. Subscriptions amodnting to £8 10s are outstanding. Twenty-tWo new. members were elected to the society during the past year, whilst 11 resignations were received. The society’s roll of membership now stands at one hundred and seventy-seven. All members will join with their executive in offering sympathy to the relatives of Mrs C. F. Vallance and Mrs J. Shearer whose deaths during the year robbed the society of two of its most respected supporters. Your executive again wishes to. thank all members for their co-operation during the year; the ladies’ committee for their excellent assistance; the stewards and judges for their special work in staging and adjudicating; all who have so kindly made donations. We offer our special thanks to our honorary treasurer, Mr H. M. Boddington, and to our honorary auditors, Messrs Low and Cunningham. Members will be asked to consider at the annual meeting ways and means oaf inauguration and running a model annual meeting ways and means of which Messrs T. Jordan and C. L. Needham have kindly offered special prizes.—H. E. Pither,’ President.
