ROAD CYCLING

WAIRARAPA CLUB. NOTES ON SATURDAY’S RACE. * (By “Three-Speed.”) The Wairarapa Club’s 20-mile race on Saturday was held under ideal conditions. The course used was from the hockey ground to Mt Bruce School and back. Twelve riders faced the starter. At the turn the limit men were riding very fast, and they held the lead till Killington dropped behind and M. Graham took his place. The race was very fast and all riders rode very well. M. Graham, off the six-minute mark, rode an excellent race, leaving his comarker before the turn. He caught the limit men and rode on to secure his first win which was well deserved. Lj. Green and D. Wishart, off the limit, rode splendidly, and gained 2nd and 3rd places, respectively. R. Killington, also off the limit, rode well but dropped back on the return journey. However he kept going to gain fourth place. B. Harman rode an exceptionally fine race to beat K. Woollett in the sprint and gained third fastest time. K. Woollett, off scratch, put up a fast performance, and his co-marker, R. Copp, also did well. K. Woollett took fastest time honours once again, R. Copp gaining second fastest. C. Dykes, by himself, and B. Dooling, who also started on his' own, did well. The latter found the pace too fast on the return journey and he retired half-way home. C. Gourlay could not keep up to his co-marker and retired at the turn. P. Mayes had his first race on Saturday but developed cramp at the turn. With a bit more training and one or two more races he should be well up at the finish. J. Brader takes the wooden spoon this week. J. Duckett was not a competitor as he has not yet recovered from the injuries he received in the big race. About five riders did not start on Saturday, most of whom are still suffering from colds. The club will hold a two-man time trail next Saturday which should be very interesting. Hard training is necessary for such a competition.
