BASKETBALL
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION. NOTES ON SATURDAY’S PLAY. (Contributed). All the games on Saturday were keenly contested and the form shown by the younger ptayers is very gratifying. Particularly is this noticeable in team work, girls now paying more attention to combination than to individual playing. By doing this the standard is being raised. It is pleasing to notice how much stricter referees are controlling the games and theieby improving the standard of the game. College A v H.S.O.G. ll—College A were much superior throughout the game. The centres and goalers dominated the play. There seemed little work for the College defenders. The combination of the College forwards is better than their accuracy in shooting, which is the weakness of the team. If the forwards practised their snooting consistently the scores would be very much higher. The College team is one of the quickest teams in picking up the ball, R. Edwards being an outstanding example. Her speed in passing and accuracy in jumping is a feature of the game and she should go a long way at the N.Z. tournament. M. Carrol, a College defender, played a good game but she wants to be able to play an attacking game as well as a defensive game. M. McLaren and J. Gemmell played well throughout the game but at times they are inclined to throw wildly. For H.S.O.G. 11, E. Stidolph in the centre, played a good, clean, open game. H.S.O.G. II have the making of a good team but they get too excited and then long high passes are the result. Their play is clean. Throughout the whole game neither team was penalised for personal contact.
Stars I v Stars ll—Both teams were short of players and the long and very high passing spoilt any good play. K. Mouat is playing well since she has adopted the short passes, her attacking game being much speedier. Her sister, N. Mouat,. would do well . to follow in her sister’s footsteps. Her game, however, is very pleasing to watch. The shooting of E. Jones was very accurate. If she speeds her play up more she will be an asset to the representative team. A. Burgess played her good solid game. It is a pity her team mate, M. Gadsby, did not play her usual good game on Saturday. H.S.O.G. I v College B—Although the O.G. team were better, College were by no means outclassed in field play. The experience of the O.G. team told on the younger .players and to a certain extent they leaned on it. Lorna Renner, for defence for 0.G., is a very speedy player, good on defence and attack. J. Russell, in the centre, is not quite playing the game as previously although still. passing well. Her speed seems to have slackened. She, however, combines well and is supported very ably by P. Stubbings. N. Cohen is right at the top of her form, and is without. a doubt a winner for her team. In the College B team the passing is improving rapidly and with a little more speed should in the second round be near ine top. I. Shoosmith, a very young player, has a promising future, her eagerness and keeness being revealed in her game. The centres of College B, M. Upston, J. Russell, another promising player, and B. Linton were very quick and all showed an understanding with each player. The defenders are not quite vigorous enough in their play. * B GRADE. Carterton v College IV. —The Carterton team so far has not suffered a loss and if they keep to the short passing which they have adopted in the last few games will continue to do well. However, their throwing is not as good as it should be and this spoils at times the field play. L. Smitn (captain) plays a good game in the centre. M. Hack makes a good defence, but relies on her weight too much to get her through. The centres play well but they should remember to pass the ball quickly into the goal. E. Sorenson (College IV team) was the only player in the team that fought for the ball. Her play was outstanding tnroughout the whole match. Her team mates would do well if they were inspired to play that type of game.
Dalefield v College II. —It is gratifying to see Dalefield taking such an interest in the game. Their members all played a good combination game. College I v T.O.G.—This was a keenly contested game, all players using every ounce of energy to win. The College forwards did good work and played a fighting game throughout, but more practice is required in goal throwing. D. Smith (T.0.G.) is a good thrower but must learn to use two hands. D. Walker did good work in the centre and speeded the centre up. She is inclined to get too excited but should, try to develop a calm attitude. Nevertheless she played a determined effort to win. P. Cody and V. Smith, College centres, worked hard and well.
It was pleasing to see new referees doing good work in the B grade. The results so far for the Queen Carnival are: lona 1440 votes; H.S.O.G. 1200 votes; Stars 375 votes; Dalefield 180 votes; College 100 votes.
