PIRINOA
CLAY BIRD SHOOTING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The South Wairarapa Gun Club held a competition on Saturday for the Tisdal Cup, the conditions being the best two scores out of four. The weather was fine but the shooting was not up to the standard of previous competi-' tions. lan Sutherland, a school boy of sixteen years, was the outstanding competitor, for besides obtaining the highest number of birds in the first round of the Tisdall Cup he also won the Texaco Cup and a sweepstake match. The following were the scores: Tisdall Cup, 18 birds. —lan Sutherland, handicap 12yds, 17 birds; W. Prussing, 14, 15; S. Hall 15,' 13; B. Brough 11, 13; R. Buick 22, 13; F. Brough 11, 12; A. The return match between the Pirinoa and Hinakura clubs was played at Hinakura at the weekend and resulted in a win for the visitors by substantial margins in both the singles and foursome matches. Although the greens were heavy after the wet weather experienced, nevertheless some good golf was played, and the results of most of the matches were exceedingly close. Morrison and Mitchell, two local players, who were considered players of considerable merit failed to withstand the play of their more youthful opponents who registered wins against them by small margins in both the singles and jfoursomes. W. Cameron, who has improved his game wonderfully within a short period, had a tough match with Riwai, and so did D. Sutherland with R. McDougall. The visitors’ top men all scored wins in the singles and foursomes, with the exception of D. Jones who was defeated by the veteran L. Sievers. The results were as follow (Hinakura players mentioned first in each instance): —
Singles.—C. Sievers lost to B: McMaster, L. Charles lost to D. Tikao, R. Cundy lost to G. Munro, L. Sievers beat D. Jones, A. Coffen lost to T. Hume, K. Sutherland lost to M. McLeod, W. Cameron lost to J. Riwai, D. Sutherland lost to R. McDougall, A. Sutherland lost to M. Herangi, A. B. Martin lost to K. Waiwera, R. Mitchell lost to J. Carter, D. Morrison lost to M. Waiwera, N. Martin beat W. Charteris. Foursomes. —Sievers and Charles lost to D. McMaster and Tikao, Cundy and L. Sievers lost to Munro and Jones, Coffen and K. Sutherland lost to Hume and McLeod, Cameron and D. Sutherland lost to Riwai and McDougall, A. Sutherland and A. Martin lost to Herangi and Waiwera, Mitchell and Morrison lost td, Carter and M. Waiwera.
Playing in the first eliminating round of the senior championship, J. Riwai beat D. Jones and G. Munro beat R. McDougall. In the second round B. McMaster defeated T. Hume and D. Tikao beat M. McLeod. B. McMaster will meet, J. Riwai and G. Munro will play D. Tikao in the semifinals.
M. Herangi eliminated M, Waiwera in the first round of the junior championship. The draw for the ladies’ championships and the Tuhitarata Cup is as follows: —Miss Edgelow plays ■ Mrs Herangi, Mrs Bragg v Mrs McKenzie, Mrs Tikao v Miss McDougall, Mrs Carter v Mrs Warren. The second round of the junior championship and the semi-finals of the senior championship will be played on Saturday. A record for the course was established by B. McMaster, when playing with T. Hume in a championship round on Saturday. In the first nine holes, playing faultless golf McMaster registered a 35, one stroke less than the par for the course, and in the rim home he returned a card of 38, which' was marred by a seven. Considering the fact that the greens were heavy a card of 73 was a meritorious performance on a course which has been rated by leading golfers as a difficult and tricky one. McMaster has consistently returned cards in the seventies this' season. The par for the course is 72.
PERSONAL. Dr and Mrs Thompson, who were staying at the Lake Ferry have returned to Palmerston North. Mr and Mrs West, who were in the district for a few days, have returned to Napier. Among the visitors who were staying at the Lake Ferry for the weekend were Mr and Mrs Law (Wellington) and Messrs Duncan and Morrison, Taumarunui. WHITEBAIT CATCHES. Small catches of whitebait were made recently at the Lake Ferry. FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL. In the return football and basketball matches played at Kahutara on Friday between the local and Kahutara schools the visiting teams won both matches.
